The Essentials
Costa Rica Packing List
Bring everything you need to have the best vacation experience! Buying stuff in Costa Rica can be pricey, especially in tourist areas. We recommend to bring what you can in your luggage.

If your trip to Costa Rica is a week or two, I recommend downloading the Saily eSIM App. You can configure it before you depart so you’ll have data connection when you land in Costa Rica. For longer trips, you can buy a local rechargable SIM card from Kolbi or Liberty.
I keep all my stuff secure in a lockable sling style backpack. I like knowing my things won’t fall out or be taken by a monkey(actually). The sling style allows me to use the back across body, and access the contents without taking off the bag. Check out this one on Amazon.
This is such an important item which is often overlooked. When I’m traveling I use this small, folding toothbrush. It’s compact and keeps the head contained, so I don’t have to worry about the bristles getting dirty.
Carrying a portable powerbank for all of your electronics is vital. Some excursions and beaches will take you far away from your car. Being able to recharge your phone and camera will keep you connected and ready for photos. I always have used Anker for their reliability and price.
I’ve tried a lot of different water shoes and sandals during my travels at the beaches of Costa Rica. The shoes I find work best are these breathable/drainable water shoes. They have a mesh upper which is fast drying. The sole is normal rubber, but it has drain holes. I took the soles out to drain even faster. They’re perfect for walking through town, then the beach and rivers – without having to change shoes.
Don’t underestimate the sun here in Costa Rica. The UV Index is pretty high and it’s super easy to spend a little too much time without protection. I use this roll on style sunscreen, as it’s great for only applying the amount that I need.
Guanacaste has many incredible beaches for snorkeling. You can walk right off the shore and start checking out all the cool fish. I recommend bringing your own snorkel set, like this Cressi fin/mask combo. The fins are short enough for luggage and are great for maneuvering underwater.
Some of the best beaches in Costa Rica require a little hike to get to. If you’d like to enjoy the day there, I recommend bringing a cooler backpack. This way you can keep your hands free to navigate trails before you reach the beach.
